Neo Geo CD : Samurai Spirit
Neo Geo CD : King of Fighter 94

  • The Neo Geo is a cartridge-based arcade and home video game system released in 1990 by Japanese game company SNK. The system offered comparatively colorful 2D graphics and high-quality sound. A major platform for arcade games at the time, the system was also available as a costly home console. The two versions of the system were known as the AES (Advanced Entertainment System, the home version) and the MVS (Multi Video System, the arcade version). The Neo Geo was marketed as 24-bit, though it was technically an 8/16/32-bit multiprocessing system. [WikiPedia]

I found a sheet of paper sitting around in a book since 10 years, it shows how much I did pay for my SNK NEO-GEO from 1991 to 1997...

I publish it here mainly for the history..

    http://web.njit.edu/~jal0737/Neo-Geo/Neo-info.htm Informations and history.

I have bought this wonderful machine at the very beginning in France (MODEL NEO-AEC serial 007444 - American) in August 1991 with Magician Lord + 1 joystick + 1 memory card for 600â?¬ !!!. I own 24 games which I paid between 100â?¬ and 150â?¬.

I have probably the best experience in videogame in my life with this machine, thanks to SNK. I never play so much on any system since the Neo Geo, the community is as strong as before, maybe more, and I decide to buy (10.09.2003) a NeoGeo CD+14 games on ebay.com and on ebay.fr, a front loading NeoGeo CD system. I am not a great fan of fighting games because I prefer plattform action and shooting game.

History of models produced by SNK

    - Neo Geo home systems (7 revisions I have been told). Language selection by rom chip

    • Second rev had a video problem that was fixed with a video daughter board in a third revision or if you sent it in to get fixed
    • Forth rev incorporated the video fix

Neo Cd systems (easy wire language selection)

    • Neo Front loading cd model (only 25000 ex. Jap only, no language switch, break easily)
    • Neo CD top loading (the best to acquire)
    • Neo CDZ (incorporates a protection against playing burns (not working 100%), 2 times faster)

Neo pocket (you select language on unit)

    • B/w model
    • Color model
    • Smaller color model (japan only)

    1.  General:

1.1. What is the Neo Geo CD?

The Neo Geo CD, or NGCD, is a video game console made by SNK, Japan,
in 1994. It's based on SNK's Neo Geo arcade and home gaming system
but uses CDs instead of ROM cartridges.

SNK's original idea was to build a CD player add-on for the cart system but
the idea got canned in favor of developing a real game console.

1.2. How many different NGCD models are there?

There are three versions, the front loader, the standard top loader
and the CDZ. The front loader was the first NGCD model initially
released in Japan, followed by the standard top loader that made its
way to the US and Europe. In 1996, SNK released the CDZ, a revised
top loading model with faster cache RAM to decrease load times. Like
the standard top loader, the CDZ got released world-wide.

1.3. What was the initial price of the NGCD front loader?

The NGCD front loader's price was put at $599 for the console, one
controller pad and a pack-in game.

1.4. What are the differences between the Neo cart and CD consoles?

While the homecart or MVS system is able to directly address the cart
memory and therefore can display graphics and effects immediately, the
CD system has to load the data first. Initial load times range from 15
to 120 seconds, some games also load between levels, like the King of
Fighters games after King of Fighters 94.

That's why some of the later (and much "bigger" in terms of MBits) games
have cuts in the CD version, objects or animations are missing, etc. This
is due to the amount of data (sprites, backgrounds, etc.) a game displays
at the same time; if it exceeds a total of 7 MB of data which is the
size of the Neo CD's RAM, the CD either has to reload certain data or
the excess data has to be cut in order to fit into the CD RAM.

However, the CD console offers CD-quality audio tracks and has a more
consistent picture quality because unlike the homecart-system, there were
less hardware revisions on the main boards. The picture output, specially
via RGB/Scart, is crystal clear and much better than with some of the
    later homecart models.

Also, some CD games have additional features not found on cart, see 3.2. for
    more info about that.

1.5. Are the CD games cheaper than the cart games?

Yes, considerably cheaper in most cases. There are a few exceptions of CD
games that reach prices of more than $100, but these are mostly collectors
items or very sought-after games. For more info, refer to section 3.

1.6. Why are games like Metal Slug 3 or King of Fighters 2000 not available
    for NGCD?

These two games are very big (688/708 MBits, respectively), so in order to
put them on CD it would have been necessary to heavily cut them down which
would have ruined the game completely. What's more, the load times of such
games would have been unbearable with their estimated 3+ minutes.

What's more, at the time when Metal Slug 3 and KoF2000 were released, SNK
already was not well anymore, that's why they cut any support for other
    systems than MVS and homecart.

1.7. Do Neo CD games have standard audio tracks?

Yes, and you can play them in your HI-FI CD player. Just insert the CD and
skip the first (data) track. Neo CDs are standard mixed-mode CDs that are
compatible to the Orange/Red Book standard of CD media.

Some of the early games like League Bowling have no standard audio tracks,
all the music and sound effects are done by code using the Neo CD's Yamaha
    FM synthesis chip.

1.8. Can I use my US/JPN games on my US/EU/JPN CD console?

Yes you can, all games in any versions are compatible to any CD console. You
can play US games on a Japanese NGCD, Japanese games on an US console, etc.
The territory setting of your NGCD (US, EU, JPN) determines the displayed
language of the games, provided they come with additional English text.
Some games are Japanese-only, like Samurai Spirits RPG or most of the
Mahjong games. These games will always run in Japanese regardless of the
    language setting of your console.

1.9. Do I need a memory card to save games?

The NGCD has a built-in 2kb game save memory that is able to hold about 25
game saves, it's not possible to use an external memory card with it.

1.10. What can I do in the CD player menu that appears when switching on
    the console?

You can replay audio CDs and access the memory card manager. If you insert
a Neo game CD, the console will scan the disc and displays "press start"
to start loading the game. If you chose to listen to the audio tracks of
a Neo CD (not standard audio CD), it will automatically skip the first
(data) track and start replaying the 2nd track.

1.11. I have a Japanese Neo CD system and want to use the Memory Card Manager,
what do the menu items mean?

While in the memory card manager, press A to activate an item, press A
again to confirm any action (e. g. deleting, formatting) and press B to
    go back one step.

    The menu items are:

    1. Backup Memory Format

Use this to format your NGCD game save memory. Caution: ALL data will be
lost after formatting! If you have a brand new NGCD, you have to format
the game save memory once before you can use it, so if you think you have
a new console and can not save your games, format the memory first and
    then try again.

    2. Display Data Name

Shows the contents of the save memory.

    3. Delete A Data

Delete game saves. Press A to select an item, press A again to confirm
deletion, press B twice to return to main menu.

    4. File User's Name

Change the name of a game save.

    5. End

    Exit to CD player screen.

1.12. Is there censorship in Neo CD games?

If you have an US or EU Neo CD console, the blood that can be seen in some
games in Japanese mode is either white or invisible. You can trick some games
into displaying all the blood and gore by setting it to Japanese language in
the option menu, but that does not work with all games. What's more, not all
games have a language option or even an option menu.

Even if you have an US version of a game, all blood and fatalities are still
in it, it's just that the EU/US territory setting censors them, only the
Japanese mode is completely uncensored. If you want blood in your games, you
have to mod your NGCD, either by presetting it to Japanese or by installing
a language switch that lets you switch between US and JPN mode.

1.13. Are there still new CD games coming out?

The development of Neo CD games has been stopped after the release of
King of Fighters 99 and The Last Blade 2 and the console had been officially
declared dead. The current owner of SNK's licenses, SNK/Playmore, has no
intention to re-live the CD system.

However, in 2002, a group of coders announced the release of a new
fighting game for the Neo CD so the future of the console may lie in the
home dev scene; no news about the new game yet, but reportedly, it is
called Super Fighter and had been released for PC back in 1993 but now
    should get a NGCD port.

    2.  Buying and Collecting:

2.1. Which CD system should I buy, Top Loader, Front Loader or CDZ?

Depends on how much money you want to spend and what you want to do with
it. If you want an inexpensive and reliable CD console, get the standard
Top Loader. It does not look as fancy as the Front Loader and takes longer
to load a game than the CDZ, but it's readily available and actually sturdy
piece of console if you handle it with care.

Some CDZ owners report sudden reboots of their console after it has been
used for a couple of hours. This is due to the case design of the CDZ that
prevents excessive heat from getting vented properly.

The Front Loader model is very huge (about the size of an Xbox) and because
it has a lot more mechanical parts than the Top Loader or CDZ, it can get
very troublesome finding spare parts for it. Also, a Top Loader in good
condition would be the most expensive CD console because of its status as
    a collectors item.

2.2. What is a good price for a NGCD console?

For a boxed Top Loader with all cables, manual and controller pads in good to
very good condition, you will have to pay between $150 and $200. Add $100 to
$150 for a CDZ or $150 to $200 for a Front Loader. Subtract between 20% and
    40% for a non-boxed/incomplete console.

2.3. Where can I find good offers for Neo CD consoles?

For the most part, you can not simply walk into a video game store and ask
for Neo CD games and hardware, but some stores that are specialized in
"retro gaming" will most likely have some decent stuff.

Although there still are shops that carry Neo stuff, the real market for
Neo-related items is the internet. There are countless Trading Forums,
online auctions and internet shops that sell Neo Geo games and
    accessories, such as

    www.egameaddiction.com (owner of www.neogeocd.net)

    www.neo-geo.com

    www.neoayato.com

    www.otaku.com.hk

    www.konsolen.de (German)

If all fails and you can not find your desired item in these shops, there's
    always eBay.

2.4. I'm about to buy a Neo Geo CD console, is there anything I should take
    care of?

Of course you should make sure that the seller is honest and reliable; Neo
games and accessories usually reach comparably high prices, that's why a
couple of scammers have chosen the Neo market as the playground for their
shady activities. If in doubt, try to get references for a seller before
buying stuff off of him, for ex. by reviewing the seller/buyer feedback of
    his eBay ID.

    Anyway, if possible, you should

    - ask the seller about the production date/date of purchase

    - thoroughly check the console for visible damage

    - take a look into the drive bay and check for excessive dust

    - check all connector ports on the back of the console

    - make sure that the power supply fits to the console (remember,
the EU uses an input voltage of 220~240V instead of the 110V of US and JPN)

2.5. I am a collector, are there any rare/expensive games that are worth
    collecting?

Since the release numbers of most common Neo CD games were quite high
(>10,000), most of them are not really rare or very hard to find but there
are exceptions. Eight CD games have been released exclusively for the Neo CD
console, they are not available in other Neo formats such as MVS cart or
    homecart. These CD Exclusives are:

    - Chotetsu Brikin'ger

    - ADK World

    - Zintrick

    - King of Fighters 96 Collection

    - Final Romance 2

    - Neo Geo CD Special

    - Samurai Spirits RPG

    - Crossed Swords 2

These CD-exclusive games are not really rare in terms of low production runs,
they are just sought-after and therefore more expensive than others.

For other games, demand is high so that they aren't as easily available. These
    games are:

    Metal Slug 1 and 2

    Ninja Master's

    Overtop

    Neo Driftout

    Breakers

    Magical Drop 2

For these games, you will have to pay considerably more, sometimes >$100 if
they are in very good condition and complete.

2.6. What are spine cards? Do all Neo CD games have them?

Spine cards are small pieces of cardboard and are wrapped around the
spine of the jewel case. They show a screenshot and the title of the game
and give the CDs a more uniform and catchy look when sitting on the shelf.

Some people think they would be part of the packaging and discard them,
but others collect them and wouldn't buy a Neo CD game without it.

A complete Neo CD game always consists of:

    - a jewel case with a transparent Neo Geo logo in the upper right corner

    - a manual

    - a back insert with a short description about the game

    - the game CD itself

2.7. I got very good offers for a couple of CD games, how can I make sure that
they are the real deal and no backup copies/bootlegs?

Modern technology brought us scanners, color copiers and affordable color
printers that are able to authentically reproduce the insert, manual and
CD stickers of a Neo CD game. However, most software pirates don't bother
with reproducing the manual and just backup the CD. Sadly, you can get scans
of covers of most games off of the Internet, that's why you will stumble
across Neo CD bootlegs that look almost identical to the original.

    Check for the following:

    - Neo Geo logo in the upper right corner of the jewel case

    - CD sticker accurately covers the entire upper part of the CD and does not
    shine

    - Data side of the CD is silver and has no visible rings/data areas

    - Professionally printed multi-page manual with good paper quality

    - The inserts are perforated on the sides to fit them into the case

    - CD, manual and back cover show a matching NGCD number

    - All inserts and the manual are of high printing quality, beware if you
    notice "watery"-looking images or pixilation

2.8. Which is better from a collector's point of view, collecting US or JPN
    versions?

There are a lot of games that had way less US releases than JPN releases, so
US versions are considered more "rare" than JPN ones and therefore are
more collectible. Normally, US versions are more expensive, but that's a
matter of availability because you will pay about the same for a US version
of an older (common) game. However, finding US versions of certain games
like Ninja Master's can be difficult which adds to the price.

A real collector would go for a complete CD collection with all JPN and US
    titles anyway.

2.9. I heard people talking about Euro versions, are they for real?

For any CD game that came out outside of Japan, SNK printed an English
manual and included an orange colored epilepsy warning card with text
in English, Spanish and German. If people are talking about "US versions",
they in reality refer to these international versions.

Commonly, these international versions are simply called US versions because
    they contain English text.

    3.  Games and Gameplay:

3.1. How many CD games do exist?

There are 97 Neo Geo CD games, eight of them are CD Exclusives (see 2.5.).
However, there are less US versions because games like Zintrick have never
seen an official US release. There are some US versions of this game floating
around, but the inserts of these versions are fan-made material.

3.2. What extras are in CD games?

Some games contain additional stuff such as galleries, extra options and
even additional play modes, like Neo Turf Masters or the Metal Slug games.
Most CD games also have unlimited continues.

What's more, there are a lot of CD games that come with an arranged
soundtrack which is the same as the official sound track CDs of SNK games
that can be bought via Japanese resellers.

3.3. What has been cut from the CD games?

Many of the later games have cuts. Examples are Last Blade 2, Samurai
Spirits IV, Metal Slug 1+2, Art of Fighting 3, and so on. There are no
cuts that would lead to gameplay or even scoring differences, most of
them center around missing sprites, objects or sound effects.

For example, in Art of Fighting 3, the player sprites are slightly smaller
than on cart. In Samurai Spirits IV, there are some background objects
    missing, etc.

3.4. Is there a chance that we see some of the CD Exclusives in cart form?

Apparently, some Neo CD games have been "ported" to Neo cart, but without
sound. There is no official CD-to-cart release, and chances are almost zero
    that it will ever happen.

3.5. Is there a chance for a re-release of some CD games?

    I don't really think so. Re-releasing a couple of sought-after CD titles
wouldn't be too expensive or labor-intensive, but even in the market
niche that is called Neo Geo, there's an even smaller niche called
Neo Geo CD - in other words, the demand would be even smaller than for
a cart re-release, so chances are very low that SNK/Playmore would do us
    the favor.

3.6. Why are there CD Exclusives at all? I thought SNK was all about big fat
    carts?

Between 1994 and 1996, SNK tried to compete in the market of CD-based
game consoles with their Neo CD system, inspired by the huge success of
Nec's PC-Engine CD/Turbo Duo and, to a lesser extend, the Sega CD.

SNK also tried to find a more economic alternative to the advanced but
very expensive carts. When the Neo CD came out, SNK wanted to give the buyers
an incentive to get the CD system and came up with the idea of CD Exclusives
that were meant to help selling systems.

The fans however didn't really want a CD-based system, they were happy with
their carts and zero load times and were reluctant to change. The CD system
was quite successful at first but sales soon went down as newer games came
out with long load times, which inspired SNK to come up with a revised
    CD console version, the CDZ.

3.7. Some people call Neo CD games "ports" of the real thing (the cart
    versions) - are they right?

No, they aren't. Porting means transporting a piece of code like a Neo game
that was made for the Neo's M68000 CPU and all its co-processors to a
different hardware platform, say the Sega Dreamcast or Sony Playstation.
Since the Neo CD has the same CPU and auxiliary processors as the Neo Geo
homecart or MVS systems, Neo CD games are no ports but simply versions of
the cart original, only with a different method of data access.

3.8. Is there an US version of (insert game name here)?

Let's put it this way, since only a few games have never been released as
US versions, it's most likely that you will find US versions for all
major CD games. Info like this is difficult to obtain because SNK didn't
bother to keep track on all their countless releases, so there may be
US/international versions of games only a few people know about.

    4.  Tech Section:

4.1. I have a Euro/PAL Neo CD and want to get rid of the slow 50Hz mode
and the PAL borders, what can I do?

There are a lot of documents dealing with Neo Geo CD modifications flying
around the Internet. I have written such a document a few years ago, it
    still can be found here:

    http://www.nickthfury.com/neogeo/cdmods.htm

You may also visit www.gamesx.com for more tech info and some Neo CD
    specifics.

You will have to open your Neo CD system and do some soldering/cutting work.
While the modifications are not really difficult if you have some basic
soldering skills, you may ask a friend with more experience or a trained
engineer to help you out here.

Remember that a poorly done mod may damage your system, so in any case, be
    careful.

Needless to say that my Neo CD modification info has been posted for
private purposes, I will take no responsibility in any damage to yourself
    or your system.

4.2. How can I switch my Neo CD to Japanese language?

There are there territory settings, USA, EUR and Japan. USA and EUR are
censored (white "sweat" instead of blood, no fatalities, etc.) while Japanese
    mode is not.

Visit the link found in 4.1 for more info and pictures on how to switch
    languages.

4.3. Now I have modded my Neo CD to Japanese territory setting but some games
    are Japanese-only now. Help!

You can mod your Neo CD with a three-way language switch. Switches like this
can be found in most electronics supply stores, just make sure you actually
    buy a three-way one, a two-way switch won't work.

Now, visit the link found in 4.1 Picture no. 3 shows the territory matrix of
your system. There are four jumpers responsible for the language/territory
settings: JN1, JN2, JN3 and JN4. These jumpers are small wire bridges that
go into two holes on each side. If you cut them open (i.e. open the bridge),
they are inactive (X), if you connect them (close the bridge), they are
    active (O).

The jumper settings for the three territories are:

    Japanese: JN1 (open) - JN2 (open) - JN3 (open) - JN4 (open)

    USA: JN1 (open) - JN2 (open) - JN3 (open) - JN4 (closed)

    EUR: JN1 (open) - JN2 (open) - JN3 (closed) - JN4 (open)

DO NOT switch between mode while your Neo CD runs. Although some people
reported otherwise, it may damage your console.

4.4. Why does my unit start to reset sporadically after a few hours of play?

If you live in a hot climate and/or have chosen the wrong place for your
console, it may overheat after two or three hours of continuous use. Normally,
this leads to read errors and resets.

Always make sure that your unit is well ventilated. Don't place it on the
carpet while using it, this will build up heat far quicker than on a clean
and even surface. Better do not put it into a TV rack or something like that,
it's best to let it rest on an even, fuss-free surface without any
obstruction on the back and top. Use a small fan for some additional cooling
and let it blow into the vent slits on the back of the unit.

4.5. My system starts to load a game but then displays a message like this:
"DISK I/O ERROR", followed by a error code in brackets. I can only power off
    afterwards, what's wrong?

There are different error codes for specific conditions but you mostly see
    these:

0000 = General error. Clean disc and try again.

0001 = Read error due to damaged/dirty laser lens or disc.

0002 and 0003 = Mechanical problem or copy protection alert.

If you see one of those codes popping up, power off, let the system
cool down, then use a Q-Tip and pure alcohol to CAREFULLY clean the small
lens that sits on the CD reader. Don't use any force, just carefully wipe
it and make sure there's no residue or fuss left.

Next, check the game disc for scratches or dirt, clean it if necessary but
    don't use any alcohol/cleaning fluid, just a fuss-free cloth.

If the error messages still appear with one game but not with another
the game disc may be faulty. If the error messages pop up no matter which
game you put in, there may be a problem with your CD reader unit.

You may want to check out some online stores (see 2.3) and ask for a CD
reader unit replacement kit. Also don't forget to visit some internet
message boards like www.neogeocd.net or www.neo-geo.com to browse for more
info or to ask for help with system repairs.

The Story so Far... ------------------- The year is 2017, In 1999 a monster earthquake devastated the entire Kanto region of Japan, thereby forcing Tokyo to move its government to a man-made island of about 115 square miles floating in Tokyo Bay. A cebtral computer controls public safety, traffic, and all other govermental functions on the island. In the middle of the island there is a huge school called the "National Belnar Institute" with over 105,400 students. This institute has yielded a number of excellent graduates worldwide. For some reason, unspeakable acts of evil have become increasingly common on this artificial island, in spite of the fact that it is supposed to be under the complete control of the central computer. Strangely enough, the incidents all began after a new Principal was assigned to the National Belnar Institute. Some people suspect that this was somehow related to the immeasurable evil that was spreading throughout the island. Now, a man by the name of Isato Kaiza has brought a stone that crystallizes fighting energy called the "Kaizer Stone" to the National Institute, to stand against the overwhelming evil as the Burning Hero "Gowcaizer".... Each character has a move that can be "copied" in this manner. After a succesful match, you will be shown your opponent's move and you will be asked wether or not you will like to have it or not. If you choose to accept the move, you will have it at your disposal in the next round and will continue to have it until you choose to accept another power. When continuing, you will be presented with the option of using ANY of the powers you have acquired thus far. Experimentation and implementation are the keys to success with the copyable moves. Hyper Copy Attacks ------------------- When you defeat your "mirror-image", you will have the option of acquiring their copyable attacks. But since you already possess all of their moves, you will have the chance to obtain the super Hyper version of your "copy" move. (ex. Below I will give brief descriptions of the them and tactics to use against them. P.Twins -------- P.Twins is actually 2 of Ohga's henchmen that "meld" into one hideous creature at the beginning of the round. It is rather strong and has 4 grabs and 4 special moves that you will become familiar with REALLY QUICKLY. Spin + Rapid Punches = It spins it's Arms in a circle rapidly, if any attacks connect while it is in the mode, the attacker will be spun around and then "rapid punched." Ground Slam = It picks you up and slams you on the ground repeatedly Grab and Punch = The "top" arms grab you and hold you in place while the "bottom" arms repeatedly punch you. Knee Slam = It Knee slams you several times. Rapid Punch = Self-explanatory Electric Charge = Lightning crackles around them and they charge forward with their fist. Note: they are temporarily invulnerable for a split second while the charge begins. Stretching Uppercut = The woman "half" stretches herself out from the central body at an upward angle to stop air attacks Graviton Thunder = A pillar of purple lightning appears in front of them and procedes forward stopping ALL land AND air attacks. Note: THIS MOVE IS COPYABLE. The best strategy against the P.Twins is to use long range attacks and to make sure you "combo" any normal moves that hit to get the most damage on them as possible. They are fairly "dumb" to some extent and will sometimes take hits by multiple projectiles before they ever block. The P.Twins love to corner you and will charge at you relentlessly until you are trapped in a corner while their "Graviton Thunder" ensures you dont jump over them. So the better you learn how to fight in "corners", the better you will do against the P.Twins. Beware of combos, the P.Twins are DEADLY with their combos. They can (and will) mix up several light punches or kicks into an "Electric Charge" for up to 85% damage (!). Their "Electric Charge" is probably their most potent and most used move. It can be easily comboed, it has very good range (about one "scaled in" screen length), and is almost instantaneous. On top of that, it renders them "invulnerable" for a split second right before the "charge". The P.Twins can (and will) use the charge right as a projectile approaches, and plow right through the projectile and hit you as you're recovering from the move (if you are close enough), its just that fast. They also will use it to knock you out of your "Desperation" move, or just after they've blocked it. However, the "Electric Charge" is not entirely invulnerable, you CAN hit the P.Twins out of it after they have started "moving" forward. This requires lightning fast reflexes and bit of luck to do, but it IS possible, just work on it (dont forget to combo it too!). Or you can just block it and immediately counter them afterwards. Ohga ----- Ohga is the Principle of the National Belnar Institute and he is TOUGH. He is insanely powerful and extrememly unforgiving of "errors" on the player's behalf. Ohga tranforms into an "angelic" being when doing certain moves. Grab and Throw = Ohga simply picks you up and throws you. Flaming Hold = Ohga picks you up with one hand and sets you ablaze while he is holding you. Self-Combustion = He ignites himself into flames. You can however hit him out of this move rather easily. Fireball = He sends out an enormous cresent-shaped fireball. Do NOT try to counter this with a fireball of your own because it will result in his fireball breaking up into several pieces that end up doing even more damage Teleport = He can teleport to anywhere on the screen rapidly and without warning. Rapid Punch = He charges forward with four punches. Block all four and then immediately counter him. Swipe = He delivers a low "swipe" that sets you up for a combo of either the uppercut, fireball, or charge attacks. Uppercut = He delivers a massive uppercut that hits from 4-7 times Angel Charge = His strongest move in which he glows white and charges at you slamming you into the other side of the screen The best tactic in fighting Ohga is to simply NEVER SCREW-UP. He always follows up on "missed" attacks and will SEVERLY hurt you. Use a "Hit & Run" approach and "counter" him whenever possible. He also does his "taunt" occasionally, it looks VERY similar to his "Self-Combustion" move as it is starting up but he never ingnites, sort of like a "fake" Self-Combustion. The instant you realize that he is doing his taunt and NOT a Self-Combustion, attack him! Make sure you lay a good hit (combo it if possible), because these chances dont come often! A Note About Copyable Moves ---------------------------- When using certain copyable moves against certain opponents, the CPU will react accordingly. It can make the CPU more agressive, defensive, airborne, ground based, or the like. For example, when you use Karin's "Spirit Hair", the CPU realizes that there are now TWO threats on the screen and it will either try to eliminate the "tiny fighter" or it will increase its assault on YOU in the hopes of eliminating you before you and the "tiny fighter" team up on him. Now, this can be both good and bad. If it tries to kill the tiny fighter first, use the opening as the go ahead for you to attack him. If it tries to kill YOU first, go defensive and wait for him to mess up and then counter him or wait for the tiny fighter (which the CPU is now ignoring) to lay a hit on the CPU and then follow it up and combo him! What you DONT want to do is to make an extremely offensive CPU even MORE offensive to the point that you can no longer defeat the CPU or you are having EXTREME difficulty doing so. This is where the "copyable" moves's benefits may not out-weigh the disadvantages. So be careful what you choose, but feel free to experiment with all of them, because only then will you truly realize the strengths and weaknesses of each one and how to use them to their full potential. For example, if you are using Arina and wanted to do her "ES Arina Beam", you would do d,df,f + 2P instead of d,df,f + P. Using the ES of a move uses up 1 Level of your Super Meter. - WakuWaku ----------------------------------------------------------------- The "WakuWaku" moves are throw techniques. They can only be performed if you are close to your opponent. - DokiDoki ----------------------------------------------------------------- The "DokiDoki" moves are the Super Moves. When one is activated, your character will flash with rainbow colors, and "DokiDoki" will appear. Each DokiDoki requires 1 Level of Super Meter to use. - HaraHara ----------------------------------------------------------------- The "HaraHara" moves special Supers that all have insane start-up time before they are executed. When one is activated, a siren will sound and the background will flash with "HaraHara: ??". Each HaraHara is capable of dealing twice as much damage as a DokiDoki. These also cost 1 Level of Super Meter. |= Special Input Commands ==================================================| - Super Mode --------------------------------------------------------------- Press all 4 buttons simultaneously When Super Mode is activated, your character will pose as they are surrounded with a burst of energy. The burst is able to hit opponent and can be used as a counter if blocking. During Super Mode, your character will flash a yellowish hue and their attacks will be 2x stronger. "Super" will appear under your character's Life Meter; it gradually get smaller and eventually fade from sight, thus ending Super Mode. Costs 1 stock of Super Meter to use. - Middle Attack ------------------------------------------------------------ Press HP + HK together Middle Attacks are attacks that can ONLY be blocked by standing (high). It will hit crouching opponent no matter if they are blocking or not. - Pursuit ------------------------------------------------------------------ When opponent is on the ground, press u + any regular attack button Like in many 3D games, after the opponent is knocked to the ground, your character can follow it up with a Pursuit; making your character jump up and land on the fallen opponent's body with an attack. If the Pursuit is missed, your character will leap back in the air, vulnerable to attacks. - Quick Recovery ----------------------------------------------------------- Press any action button the second right before hitting the ground After throws that toss you up in the air, instead of having your character crash into the ground, you can quick recover. They will spring off the ground and flip to their feet, not taking the full damage from the throw and negating any pursuit chances. - Rising Attack ------------------------------------------------------------ Tap u + any regular attack button rapidly after being knocked down A Rising Attack is an attack your character can perform as they are standing from being knocked down. - Rebound Attack ----------------------------------------------------------- Press any kick button when you hit the wall A Rebound Attack is when your character flies into a wall, then leaps back at the opponent with a retaliation attack. You don't take damage from hitting the wall if you Rebound Attack. - Safe Fall ---------------------------------------------------------------- Press any punch button when you hit the wall A Safe Fall is when you hit "catch" the wall, and just fall to the ground on your feet. You don't take the damage from hitting the wall if you Safe Fall. |= The WakuWaku Crew =======================================================| It is said that the person who collects all sevens of the legendary WakuWaku balls will have their dearest wish granted. Those who find one of the balls become obsessed with the ruthless desire to obtain the others, who will be victorious in the bitter battle to become the owner of all the balls. - Neo-Geo version FAQ introduction

    FINAL NOTE _________________________________________________________________

      Ossu!

Presenting the Neo-Geo exclusive version of the "WakuWaku 7" FAQ. Since the
button configuration is totally different, it seemed best to make another FAQ
with the button changes. I personally would like to thank Jacob Poon for this
idea and for bringing it to my attention. ^_^ This version of the FAQ is much
more compact then the Saturn's version since Saturn-only information has been
taken out. But in any case, all the prime information is available.
Here's a list of things that may show up in future installments:
      1) Finalization on any Neo-Geo changes and moves
      2) Correct speech translations and input
      3) Losing quotes
      4) Any other miscellaneous stuff (i.e- combos, strategies, etc.)
Any questions or info regarding the game, send it in! I enjoy getting stuff.
If you want to know about the game, or want a review, just ask. Thanks!
       Abayo, minna!

Carn Janne Muscle Power Erick Shura Mudman Ryofu ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATA/COPYRIGHT I typed up this guide when I sold Samurai Shodown for the Neo-Geo in order to acquire World Heroes 2: Jet. I was a huge fan of the original World Heroes 2, so I thought this game would be better. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that this game did not have some of the options that I loved about the original, such as Death Matches, fighters having their own background stages, etc. Anyway, this game is still very fun to play, and this guide is designed to be used as a quick reference for the fighters' special moves. ------=| INTRODUCTION |=-------------------------------------------------------

World Heroes Perfect is a Neo Geo Beat 'em up game, available in the arcades and
on the home Neo Geo systems. I myself own the Neo Geo CD version, therefore all
moves shown have been discovered/confirmed by me.

    ------=| GAME DETAILS |=-------------------------------------------------------

    FEATURES :

The gameplay is much like World Heroes 2 Jet, with added six-button play
(3 punch strengths, 3 kick strengths, & also 4 taunts per character). All
characters also have an ABC Special move, and standard Weopon Killer and Guard
    Crush attacks.

The game now features a 'Hero' charge indicator, to allow enhanced versions of
certain special moves, and also added are last-breath come-back Ultimate Attack
moves when energy is low (similar to Fatal Fury Desperations).

In the Home version, there are 3 modes of play; MVS, CD and VS. All characters
are playable in the VS mode, MVS is Arcade mode. I do miss the old Death Match
option of World Heroes I & II, that's what I think made the original game work
and be more individual from all the other beat 'em ups out there. I also enjoyed
spiking my opponent on a wall!

In MVS mode, players fight through each period in turn until meeting the final
    boss.

The game also now features the ability to do multiple attack hits in the air, and
some special moves produce hits of 30+ hits!!! The general game fighting engine
has been improved, allowing for greater combo potential. Certain moves can be
'buffered', allowing an opponent to be hit as they land/after being thrown.
Characters even look up when their opponent jumps!

Usual best-of-three round winning rules apply.

    PERFECT POSE:

If a round is won without losing any of your energy bar (i.e: a Perfect Victory),
you will be rewarded with a unique 'Perfect Pose' for your character. Some
characters have the same 'PP' as one of their Taunt moves, other characters have
some very good poses which would not normally be seen. Hence the name of the
    game: World Heroes PERFECT!

Also, I noticed that when I was playing on 'The Period' stage, and I got a Perfect
Victory using Kim Dragon, he did his Perfect Pose and a statue of the dog (in the
background of that stage) fell from the sky!

    COLOUR SELECTION :

Two colours can be selected, using either A or D buttons when selecting a
character. The A button is the normal colour, the D button is the alternative
    colour.

    CHARACTER SIZE :

The game features the ability to play against a minaturised CPU opponent in VS
mode. To do this when selecting a CPU opponent, select them with the B button.
The CPU opponent then becames TINY, and all their moves too!

Rasputin's ABC Special Attack produces this effect, as well as Gokuu's Genie-
    Sucker move.

    HERO GAUGE :

Each character has at the bottom of the screen a bar which fills up when your
character attacks the opponent and makes contact (special or normal moves, blocked
or not). When the bar becomes full, it flashes and displays 'HERO'. At this
    point, your character now has the following abilities;

        - MAX Move; a boosted special or Ultimate Attack move
(one or more of the characters special moves becomes stronger,
and your character will flash before it executes).

See each characters section for details. * is specified by any
special move which can do this.

        - Increased number of hits on opponent

        - Boosted power of normal attack moves

        - Decreased effectiveness of opponents moves on your own character
(you also cannot be knocked out)

The bar will only drain when you have used the move (successfully hitting the
opponent or not). Partly charged bars are carried over to the next round.

    ABC SPECIAL ATTACK :

Each character has their own individual form of move/attack when pressing the
buttons ABC together (also may be done with a joystick direction nd ABC.

See each character's section for details of these moves.

    ULTIMATE ATTACK MOVES :

These are 'come-back' / desperation moves, which can be used any time your
character's energy bar is flashing (from too much hit damage). The effectiveness
and appearance of the moves is also altered if the HERO Gauge is full at the time
    the move is used.

Full details are given in each characters section.

    ------=| STAGE DETAILS |=------------------------------------------------------

     1 - GENESIS

The creation of the world is witnessed here. Flows of lava and erupting
volcanoes are everywhere, giving a red/yellow glow to the stage.
Opponents fight on the edge of a great chasm.

     2 - JURASSIC PERIOD

Jungle/swamp area, lush green vegetation and dragon flies fill the screen.
Dinosaurs and animals witness the proceedings. Fight takes place in a
         large puddle of the swamp.

     3 - THE ICE AGE

Large dinosaur bones and ice create the scene, with breakable bones in
the forground. A family of rodents run around the screen. It is
night-time and snow is drifting down slowly.

     4 - THE STONE AGE

Fight takes place in a cave, with cavemen eating and watching, Mammoths
circle in the background. There is a large stone wheel to the left.

     5 - THE MEGALITHIC AGE

A very Eqyptian mood to this stage, pyramids in the background and slaves
are hauling huge slabs of stone along. The fight takes place on a great
block of stone (which is being moved), at sunset.

     6 - THE DARK AGE

A dark, foggy dimmly-lit back street at night, with ghostly spirits
flying around the scene, and dark red eyes peering out from dark doorways.
         A very spooky stage.

     7 - GENROK PERIOD

Fighting on a hill-top dwelling, many different types of people watch the
proceedings. There are some trees where birds are restings, and a busy
village can be seen in the background. There is a mountain in the far
         distance.

     8 - THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The scene is a busy train station, a huge steam train dominates. There
are many people around with their luggage, looking very 18th century.

     9 - GREAT WAR PERIOD

A U-boat docking bay at midnight, the moon reflecting on the calm sea.
There is a lot of loading going on; boxes, barrels, chicken crates and
bombs. Fighting takes place on the deck of a U-boat.

    10 - THE PERIOD

In the city street, a huge crowd cheers the fight and throws bottles at
the fighters. A tall skyscrapper is in the background.

    11 - BLACKNESS CASTLE

Zeus's sky palace. There are two huge sabre-toothed tigers present, and
many armoured knights holding draped lances aloft. The fight is in a
long hall, a painting hangs on the far left wall.

    12 - FINAL STAGE

Blackness Castle has been torn apart, crumbling and deserted. Fierce winds
         blow and lightning flashes.

Before the final stages, your character and Dr. Brown are seen travelling in the
Time Machine, but Dr. Brown begins to have trouble, the Time Machine falters and
he loses control. He lands at the sky palace Blackness Castle to fight Zeus.

    SPECIAL GROUND MANOUVERS :

Dashing Attack - Forward Dash + any attack button.

Guard Attack - (similar to Fatal Fury series)
During an attack, you can use powerful 'Guard Attack'
techniques to destroy the enemy guard.

IMMEDIATELY after blocking an attack, press -O + A

Blow Defense - Use this to go on the offensive & thwart the enemy's
        Attack attack (ie: Guard Crush).

Certain hits can stun the opponent for a split second
(when they blocked the move), allowing you to initiate
                         an attack on them.

This is similar to the way fighter's clash swords in
Samurai Shodown II. Each characters section shows this
                         move.

A good example of this is Hanzou's standing B punch against
                         a blocking opponent.

Projectile - Before a projectile hits, use this move to destroy the
Weapon Killer projectile! A good example is Hanzou's AB punch hitting
another Hanzou's Shuriken and breaking it apart.
Each characters section shows this move.

Notes:- Blocking at the latest moment will deflect a
                                 projectile away.

If two projectiles meet, they will destroy each
other (or if a projectile meets Rasputin's Ice Ball
or Erick's Blizzard Breath), the projectile will
                                 get frozen!

    Notes:-

(close) - the move must be executed when next/close to an opponent
                 (i.e: within throwing range)

             * - move is enhanced when Hero Guage full (MAX move)

All moves shown are for characters facing to the right.

Some moves can also be done in the air, and are marked as so.

Some moves which require the down-up motion (such as Kim Dragon's 'Dragon Kick'),
do not require to be charged. Moves which do require to be charged (i.e: Janne's
moves) are marked as; Hold O-, -O + button etc.

The MAX move can only be executed when the character's HERO Gauge is full and
flashing the word 'HERO'. After executing this move, the Hero Gauge will be
    empty again.

The Ultimate Attack move can only be executed when your character's energy bar
    is flashing red.
