    • The audience of my homepage is really starting to rise....a big thanks to all my visitors! :-)
    • I have also migrated my Wiki to the latest stable release of WikiPedia 1.3.9 released 2004-12-12

  • If you do not like the overall design of my homepage, You can play with the "Template Chooser" bloc. The default templates is rhuk_planetfall
  • Downtime of server later this week - nearly done :-)

    i have written a powerpoint which has now nearly 70 pages...
    I need one day or more to reinstall the server.

    • Backup all databases
    • Backup the filesystem
    • Scan the backup for exploits ad spyware, crapware, rootkit
    • Reinstall the server with Suse 10.0 and Plesk 8.2
    • Increase security -> ssh only with PKI and protocol 2, permissions.d, appArmor, se linux
    • Review Plesk packages -> no PHP4, mySQL4 for example
    • Install required modules in Apache: mod_evasive, mod_security, mod_limitip, php5 runing with fastcgi and suexec
    • Maybe  install http://www.hardened-php.net/hardening_patch.14.htmlwhat_is_the_hardening-patch
    • Domains and Subdomains will be newly created
    • Restore evrything -> all password will be changed
    • Alle administrator panel (Joomla, + plesk) will be with htaccess protected
    • Crontab -> chkrootkit, exploit.sh,  rkhunter,

    So it will be a very intensive day...sorry for the downtime

    From WikiPediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtime

    Downtime refers to a period of time or a percentage of a timespan that a machine or system (usually a computer server) is offline or not functioning, usually as a result of either system failure (such as a crash) or routine maintenance. The opposite is uptime.

    • Maintenance downtimes have to be carefully scheduled in industries that rely on nearly 24-hour service, such as e-commerce, medical informatics, news reporting, and persistent online games. In many cases, system-wide downtimes can be averted using rolling upgrades.
    • Downtimes caused by system failures can have serious economic impact. To minimize these effects network monitoring can be used.

    In Service Level Agreements, it is common to mention a percentage value (per month or per year) that is calculated by dividing the sum of all downtimes timespans by the total time of a reference time span (e.g. a month). 0% downtime means that the server was available all the time.

    For Internet servers downtimes above 1% per year or worse can be regarded as unacceptable as this means a downtime of more than 3 days per year. For e-commerce and other industrial use any value above 0.1% is usually considered unacceptable.
  • I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas / Joyeux Noel / Frohliche Weihnachten!

  • What is a DNS? click read more

    Why it will affect YOU? because windows has a DNS cache, that get refresh every  XX hours  or days  (very depending), So You may have a risk of  going to my OLD page on the OLD server. You may need to flush your DNS cache!

    If You see this Message, do not worry You are at the right place on the right server, otherwise here is how to solve this problem for Your pleasure.
    open a dos windows and type : ipconfig /flushdns

    from wikipedia

    The Domain Name System or DNS is a system that stores information about host names and domain names in a kind of distributed database on networks, such as the Internet. Most importantly, it provides an IP address for each host name, and lists the mail exchange servers accepting e-mail for each domain.

    The DNS provides a vital service on the Internet, because while computers and network hardware work with IP addresses to perform tasks such as addressing and routing, humans generally find it easier to work with host names and domain names, for example in URLs and e-mail addresses. The DNS therefore mediates between the needs and preferences of wetware and of software.

  • Our server is highy instable in the past 2 weeks, I run YaST to update all packages, and also start chkrootkit

    chkrootkit(Check Rootkit) is a common unix-based program intended to help system administrators check their system for known rootkits. It is a shell script using common UNIX/Linux tools like the strings and grep commands to search core system programs for signatures and for comparing a traversal of the /proc filesystem with the output of the ps (process status) command to look for discrepancies.

    While googling, I've found that:
    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive/thread/407443-1.html

    WHT isn't here to take the place of experience, or to supply you with skilled administration experience. Unfortunately, that's the mistake that most make, assuming they can just open up a server, without the proper experience, come here when something like this happens, thusly putting their own clients at risk.

    As for the hack itself, it depends on the severity of it, whether or not I'd recommend formatting. In this case, given the common description of a bindshell:

    This utility allows users to open an interactive shell over a port, bypassing all system logging, thus making it possible for users to stealthy administer a machine.

    Because of the mere definition of this, and the function of this, you can't trust ANY of the system binaries at this point. Bindshell does just what it's supposed to do, it provides a shell for users to do whatever they want with your system, INCLUDING replacing system binaries and the like.

    The not so good part to this is this also can be run as a perl script, which means it doesn't ALWAYS have to listen to the port, it can simply listen to the port when the end user calls this.

    One thing you can do to prevent this is have a decent ruleset for mod_security, adding bindshell to the list, adding bash, rsh, etc to the list as well, but that may end up causing problems as well as preventing them.

    To get rid of this, you're going to have to find out WHERE it came from, and what kind of damage it has done, before making a full assessment. That's not something that the group here @ WHT can help you with, as that can only be done by someone with a good few years of experience in the field

    My site has been put offline because of the workload it put on my provider infrastructure...

    It seems that the {SEO/SEF} engine (www.open-sef.org) combined with the number of visitors (1300 daily), hits (1.8M monthly), bandwidth (11 to 16Gb monthly) stress the mySQL server too much. My site also run on a machine where there is already 90 others clients. My recent popularity is related to the open source development I am doing for Joomla (7 GPL projects hosted at {www.joomla.org}):

    * com_akobookPlusModified version of the great akobook from arthur konze, This version now protect JOOMLA Guestbook entry from spammers using: - com_security (captcha), - com_hashcash (crypto hashkey), - com_bayesianNaiveFilter (learning filters) all these methods can be defeat through...using advanced techniques

    * com_akocommentPlusModified version of the great akocomment from arthur konze, This version now protect JOOMLA comments from spammers using: - com_security (captcha), - com_hashcash (crypto hashkey), - com_bayesianNaiveFilter (learning filters) all these methods can be defeat through...using advanced techniques

    * com_bayesianSpamFilteringA spam filter that evaluates email message content to determine the probability that it is spam. Bayesian filters are adaptable and can learn to identify new patterns of spam by analyzing incoming email.. Instead of identifying subject line or headers of the email, Bayesian filter will review the content of the email to prevent or block spamming. Bayesian filtering is the process of using Bayesian statistical methods to classify documents into categories.

    * com_hashcashHashcash technology for Joomla Forcing the spammer to pay the price (computing power) before submitting rubish to Your homepage (comments, guestbook for example). The user will have to create a new cryptographic value of a hidden field (Javascript code provided) and that may take 1 to 2 seconds, but may be more with RSA 1024.... This also do not allow robot to easily submit code without parsing Your HTML page before... Hashcash definition: A sender of non-spam posting attached a hidden field from his post which proves that he has invested a modest amount of computer time into solving a small puzzle, often involving the recipient's email address. The receiver can, at negligible computational cost, verify that a sender had solved the puzzle. This can be regarded as a form of numerical stamp, where the 'cash' part is the effort invested by the sender. The theory is that spammers, whose business model relies on their ability to send large numbers of emails with very little cost per message, cannot afford this investment into each individual piece of spam they send. Receivers can verify whether a sender made such an investment and use the results to help filter email.

    * com_Log4phpConsistent and quality logging at a glance for JOOMLA Log4php is a php port of Log4j, the most popular Java logging framework (see Log4J for details). It has been packed for Joomla by me. Home of Log4PHP at Apache.logging * Configuration through xml and properties file (same structure as log4j). * File, RollingFile, DailyFile, Echo, Console, Mail, PEAR::Db, PHP error, Syslog or NT events and Socket appenders. * Simple, TTCC, Pattern, Html and Xml Layouts. * Nested (NDC) and Mapped (MDC) Diagnostic Contexts. * Switchable internal debug.

    * com_securityimagesSecurity Images or CAPTCHA for Joomla Ever been to a site where you had to register and the registration form required that you type in the same phrase that is found in a hard-to-read image? Joomla has now this possibility thanks to my component com_securityimages. CAPTCHA definition: A captcha (an acronym for "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart") is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human. The term was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, and Nicholas J. Hopper of Carnegie Mellon University, and John Langford of IBM. A common type of captcha requires that the user type the letters of a distorted and/or obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen.

    * com_joomlacloud Tag Cloud technology for Joomla A tag cloud (more traditionally known as a weighted list in the field of visual design) is a visual depiction of content tags used on a website. Often, more frequently used tags are depicted in a larger font or otherwise emphasized, while the displayed order is generally alphabetical. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. Selecting a single tag within a tag cloud will generally lead to a collection of items that are associated with that tag.

    * And the number of pages known: {59900 sites} [Google] - {15200 sites} [Altavista],
    * The list of referer {HERE,} with some prestigious like www.xboxmediacenter.com
    * My Google Ranking: 5/10 which is huge for a personal page.
    * Domain: www.waltercedric.com is reserved till 2015

    Basically, I will have to go from a mutualised Server web hosting (45€/yearly) to a Dedicated Server web hosting (159€/monthly)

    Months Unique visitors Visites Pages Hits Bandwidth
    Jan 2006 25391 32363 123894 1861073 10.70 Gb

    {detailled statistics available here}, statistics from 2005 available

    If You want to
    * Sponsor me and take some of the costs of hosting, I will look carefully at all offers,
    * Have ideas on how to resolve this issue,
    * Have experience something similar,

    I stay in touch with my current provider : {www.cineteck-fr.com} and will hopefully have more info soon. Please come back soon. Thanks for your patience.
