See the search globe yourself, best viewed in google chrome Smile

Developed and designed by the Google Data Arts Team using WebGL, the backend of the technology uses your computer’s hardware to generate fast, 3D graphics. Google says that in order to use Search Globe you need a WebGL-enabled browser (like Google Chrome), to see the Globe.

and they open source the project so developers can build their own globe

The WebGL Globe is an open platform for visualizing geographic information in WebGL enabled browsers. It supports data in JSON format, a sample of which you can find here. dat.globe makes heavy use of the Three.js library, and is still in early open development.

    From Google Blog

It's been an exciting nine months since welaunched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designedGoogleChrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Linux may get mainstream with Android and Google OS maybe :-)

  • The biggest news of the week is the port of Google's Picasa to Linux.with WINE!

Wine is an open source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. Think of it as a Windows compatibility layer. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code, but it can optionally use native system DLLs if they are available. You can find more info
Several months ago we reported that CodeWeavers was contracted to port some Google apps to Linux.

"Picasa incorporates nearly all the features of the current Windows version of Picasa, providing you with the tools you need to easily find, edit, and share the photos on your computer," explained Google's Open Source Programs Manager Chris DiBona. "And because it runs on a carefully tested version of Wine, Picasa avoids the slowing effects of an OS emulation or a virtual machine."

I am using it, and very satisfied by its speed and ease of use: It looks like and react like the windows Picasa version. Do not wait any longer and give it a try, it is the perfect tool  to administer our growing library of pictures.
Google/CodeWeavers have also committed all patches for WIne to make this happen into the main development tree, it may also allow more windows apps to run under linux, and that's great for the whole community!
You do not have to install WINE, the total size is only 17Mb compressed, not bad for such a software and all its function wrapped to Linux API.
The only functionalities missing would be a neural network to automatically recognize and query pictures by their statistical content...but I am asking too much :-)

    Hello elta68,

As a participant in the Google(TM) Code Jam 2004, we thought you would be
interested in hearing about the Google Code Jam 2005, Powered by TopCoder(R).
This exciting competition puts you head-to-head with some of the best coders in
the world. Take this opportunity to contend for $155,000 in cash and a chance
to impress Google with your skills. [...]

You're a crazy coder? with an exceptional scientific background in maths/physics? and want to fight in a turnament against the best coders in the world? then Google™ Code Jam 2005may be for You!

The competition is available in four programming languages - Java, C++, C#, and VB.

I've tried last year the qualification round. And I am proud that I was not able to solve any problems :-)... They are always combining mathematics, algorithmics, recursivity, and large data collections. Most of the time, a physical concept/background is also needed to start resolving the problem. The question is how looks like developers which are able to resolve such questions in so less time/with stress, and are the questions/answers really useful in a real life of development.

Yes it is only a turnament...I invite You to create an account and look at the questions and maybe make a try....But be prepared to do a lot of training before ever thinking going to the real arena :-)

Utility tokens, also called user tokens or app coins, represent future access to a company’s product or service. The defining characteristic of utility tokens is that they are not designed as investments (if properly structured)

    Security Tokens

If a Crypto token derives its value from an external, trade-able asset, it is classified as a security token and becomes subject to federal securities regulations. Failure to abide by these regulations could result in costly penalties and could threaten to derail a project. However, if a startup meets all its regulatory obligations, the security token classification creates the potential for a wide variety of applications, the most promising of which is the ability to issue tokens that represent shares of company stock. display in an entertaining way the state of ICO worldwide legal framework and will be a work in progress for the next months to come.

Chromium OS is an open-source project that aims to build an operating system that provides a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web. In this small post I provide you the URL to a binary build, and a small how to install it on a USB stick.

After 2 seconds boot time, and the login screen, you should see the following:

    Linux Instructions

Extract ChromeOS-Cherry.img and run the following command in the same directory as the file, where X is the device name of your USB drive.
    # sudo dd if=ChromeOS-Cherry.img of=/dev/X bs=4M
Once the command finishes, you can then boot from the USB drive

    Windows Instructions

Download Image Writer for Windows ( and extract the program. Launch the program, and select the image (ChromeOS-Cherry.img) and your USB drive letter from the drop down box. Click "Write". The install image will then be copied to the drive. Once it's done, close the program and you can then boot from the USB drive.

Firstly, unmount the drive you want to install Chromium OS to. Place the downloaded file onto your desktop. Open System Profiler, click USB on the list at the side and then select the entry that represents your USB disk. Now look for the BSD Name column (, ie disk1

open up Terminal and type the following commands.
    # cd Desktop
    # tar -zxvf ChromeOS-Cherry.tar.gz
Replace X with the name of the disk you found earlier, ie disk1.
    # sudo dd if=ChromeOS-Cherry.img of=/dev/X bs=4m
This command will ask you to enter your password (the same one you enter when installing software for example), type it in and press enter.

We're excited to announce the availability of never-before-seen images from the LIFE photo archive. This effort to bring offline images online was inspired by our mission to organize all the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.
This collection of newly-digitized images includes photos and etchings produced and owned by LIFE dating all the way back to the 1750s.
Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We're digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive &8212; about 10 million photos.
