  • photowidget.smugmug.flickr.picasa

I did integrate the Flickr widget from RoyTanck.com as a Joomla module. This version do not depend on Roy’s site, and run offline if needed as i rewrite the RSS parsing code myself. For now you can see it live running on the right side of Roy’s site

    • Your Smugmug/ Picasa or Flickr RSS feed. To get feed URL one for your Flickr photo stream, simply go to your photo stream's page and right-click the little orange RSS icon at the bottom. Select ‘Copy link location’ or ‘Copy shortcut’ and paste it into the form below. For Picasa, there’s a link called ‘RSS’ at the bottom right of the ‘My Photos’ page, and a small icon on the sidebar on other pages. For Smugmug the icon is located at the bottom of the page.
    • The dimensions for the widget. This depends almost entirely from the layout of your website. Square aspect rations work best (equal width and height). At very large sizes (400px and up) the thumbnails might have bigger pixels than usual.
    • The background color for the widget. You can use Colorpicker.com to get the right value for your website. The selected color serves only as a backup if ‘Use background transparency’ is selected.
    • RSS feed is also optional photowidget also support up to 10 images on your server.

Before releasing I need to clean the code a bit, test the installer, write a small documentation, submit module to Joomla! extension.. maybe tomorrow, but before the week end for sure!

I did code a small PHP script that should be use in a Cron and that use the component Joomla tags of Phil Taylor to output a Flash Tag Cloud !

    How it works

A small php scripts joomlatags.php run regularly and output a XML file (tags.xml) that will be displayed by tagcloud.swf. This script is currently hardcoded to work with Joomla Tags from Phil Taylor but can be changed according to your needs.

    Tag cloud generator

Put the file joomlatags.php OUTSIDE of the root of your site. It must NOT be accessible to by the web server, as it contains the Mysql password in plain text!

Open the file joomlatags.php and change the settings at the beginning of the file, the most important settings are well documented.

Decide how often you would like to update the cloud, and define a Unix Crontab, for example If I would like to refresh my tag cloud at one o’clock in the night, I may define 1 0 * * * *  php /pathto/joomlatags.php

    Tag cloud viewer

Copy all others files to the root or directory accessible by apache.

    • index.php
    • swfobject.js
    • tagcloud_serif.swf
    • tagcloud.swf
    • tags.xml

Run at least once the Tag Cloud Generator joomlatags.php

Point your browser to the location where you place index.php

    http://tags.waltercedric.com/

    Limitations

I have more than 1000 tags defined, so in order to keep MY cloud readable, the script joomlatags.php either

    • Allow you to remove tags that are not enough represented
//tags below this threshold wont be displayed in cloud
      $mintagCount = 2;
    • Or limit the number of entries with SQL
      limit 0, 100;

Don’t output too much tags or it may be slow on some machine.

Output is different in some browser: try Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Opera. Only Firefox render differently the cloud than all others browser.

    Based on

Based on Roy Tanck's (http://www.roytanck.com/) Wordpress 3D flash tag cloud plug-in, swfobject.js by Geoff Stearns (http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/) for the embedding of the tag cloud.

  • Version 1.1.0 is out

NEW: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) friendly. You can now select to either embed links in your HTML page (so search engine can easily find all your URL) or leave them outside on your server

    nimbus.1.1.0.seo

Be careful with size of data embedded: do not display too much tags or the size of your homepage may explode.

NEW: refactoring, now really object oriented (OO), comment added to code, easier to understand and maintain.

NEW: check that file can be written, that you have installed Joomla tags from Phil Taylor, This will reduce the number of support requests.

    nimbus.1.1.0.error

NEW: powered by Nimbus can be removed by changing a switch in the backend.

If you would like to use the same tag cloud as the one I am using at the bottom of this page, you will be please by the release of this new module for Joomla! call Nimbus.

I came across Joomulus module a while ago, it goes through your Joomla! articles content and create a tag cloud:

A tag cloud or word cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, used typically to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color.

This is the solution you are looking for, and you should not need to read any further if you DO NOT USE Joomla! Tags from Phil Taylor.

But I am using a proprietary tagging solutions since 2 years that I like very much: Joomla Tags from Phil Taylor

Joomla Tags is a Joomla Extension for adding tags to Joomla Content. Use Joomla Tags to allow content classification by keywords (Tags), can also be used to create virtual categories to add content into, over coming Joomla! single section/category structure

That’s why I decide to drop Joomulus, and mix both solutions (Joomulus  + Joomla! tags) to create a new module: Nimbus, which is Free, released under GPL v3.

Why did I choose Nimbus as a name? for obvious reasons:

     nimbuscloud

A nimbus cloud is a cloud that produces precipitation. Usually the precipitation reaches the ground as rain, hail or snow, however, that is not a requirement, falling precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground

    Requirements for Nimbus

    • You need to have a license of Joomla Tags, or Nimbus won’t work nor make sense.
    • You need currently to have a way to define CRON on your server

    Notes:

Nimbus, Joomulus is based on Roy Tanck's wp-cumulus http://www.roytanck.com, a wonderful Word Press 3D flash tag cloud plug-in.

  • logo_simplepie_horizontal feature_feed

The module PhotoWidget has been totally rewritten using simplepie.org, a famous open source RSS parser, by the way Joomla!, Drupal, and a lot of open source projects use it natively.

SimplePie is a very fast and easy-to-use class, written in PHP, that puts the 'simple' back into 'really simple syndication'. Flexible enough to suit beginners and veterans alike, SimplePie is focused on speed, ease of use, compatibility and standards compliance.

    Code is now:

    • Smaller,
    • Object oriented: it is funny how you always start to hack small project in php in a non object oriented way at the beginning :-)
    • More robust toward multiple RSS feeds.

But it also contains some new interesting features! Below is an example of Photowidget ouput with a Smugmug RSS feed. Photowidget support: Picasa, Flickr, G2, and a lot of other RSS feeds.

    What’s new

BUG:&160; by clicking on Smugmug/Picasa/Flickr thumbnail, it drive you to the correct gallery

NEW: Code use SimplePie and no more my custom RSS parser, this mean more compatibility, speed, and quality of RSS parsing/caching.

NEW: if you don’t like the flash output, you can now output pictures from an RSS feed in a full HTML badge manner. It will just fill the space you give in the module as seen below

    photowidgetSmugmugHTML

NEW: Flickr thumbnail picture size can now be selected

NEW: Picasa thumbnail picture size can now be selected

    photowidget-Picasa-Flickr.size

NEW: You can copy this module&160; many times and use it at different places in your layout (before only one instances was able to run for each Joomla!) at the condition to use an unique id for each.

  • RSSVoyage is a Flash based RSS reader, which use the mouse wheel only, just roll wheel to see news from up to 2 days ago. If only it would be available as a Firefox plugin...

    rssvoyage&160;

Add new RSS is done in the bottom bar (subscribe to my RSS by adding http://www.waltercedric.com/index.php?format=feed&type=rss for example :-))

  • I release now the code that power my sub domain http://tags.waltercedric.com

    tags.waltercedric.com

The tag cloud is displayed in its own sub domain and use frame. It let your visitor browse your site really fast, as the top menu (menu.php) is always displayed. The nice effect is done in Adobe Flash. The flash code is coming from Roy Tanck's wp-cumulus http://www.roytanck.com, a wonderful Word Press 3D flash tag cloud plug-in.

I did implement this in less than an hour, it is rough, but it simply work in my setup. You can use this code as a start. (License is GPL v3)

    Requirement 1

Currently the code parse database tables of Joomla Tags from Phil Taylor

Joomla Tags is a Joomla Extension for adding tags to Joomla Content. Use Joomla Tags to allow content classification by keywords (Tags), can also be used to create virtual categories to add content into, over coming Joomla's single section/category structure

So you need a license (it may be free one day), soon Joomla 1.6 will be out, It will support tagging out of the box, and I will support this as well

    Requirement 2

I did not implement caching, nor have any Joomla access to framework, that is why I decide to update all clouds in a CRON. So you must be able to define a CRON to update your clouds

    Configuration and first run

Edit the file generator/config.php and change values for your host.

run the the following 3 files in directory generator at least once, or put them in a CRON

    # php tagsall.php

    # php tagsletters.php

    # php tagstop100.php

    Customizing

You can change colors and size of the cloud by editing display.php

    Final note

Drop me an email if you ever use this code, I am always interested to know who use my code :-)
