I particulary like this passage, since I share the same vision about open source, from
Interview with Tony Bove, Author of Just Say No to Microsoft at www.xyzcomputing.comAre you a major proponent of the open source movement, or are you just against anything that is as harmful as you see Microsoft as being? A lot of people see open source developers as the good guys, but they certainly have problems of their own.I think the open source movement is sincere and represents a viable alternative to shrink-wrapped, proprietary software. The business model for software is shifting. The freedom to work with the source code is its own reward. If programmers discover bugs, they can open the source code, fix them, and send the fixes immediately back to the keeper of the source code. The programmers are license-bound to send improvements back if they intend to distribute them, so these bug fixes and improvements are rolled into new versions that become available immediately on public websites. Some improvements and fixes are hotly debated in newsgroups and emails before they become part of the new versions, and many are challenged by alternatives in a sort of competition that ensures survival of the fittest. But a lot of good code comes out of this process.Which is not to say that this undisciplined approach to system debugging produces the best code. Sometimes programmers create fixes that are just good enough for them and their specific problems. But even if a programmer fixes a problem in a way that breaks other parts of the system, the effect is to place a giant arrow on the entire problem, forcing other programmers to create better fixes.By comparison, Microsoft -- like any commercial software company -- tries to fix defects before shipping a new system or upgrade by providing beta versions to power users. While that process can work for simple bugs, more complex system crashes that occur when using products from other companies (such as printers, pointing devices, network cards, and so on) are harder to detect without more widespread distribution of the beta software. And when qualified programmers outside of Microsoft find bugs, all they can do is send emails to Microsoft -- they canââ¬â¢t try to fix them, because the source code is not available to them. The open source world is like a bazaar populated with merchants large and small. The best merchants attract the most business. In most cases, the software is free, and good service is available for a price. The software industry business model is changing to a model that charges for support and services and gives away the software -- like a free cell phone with a monthly service. You no longer have to pay for shrink-wrapped boxes of software products that you have to integrate with your system on your own.The problems with open source software are, for the most part, legal ones involving patents. These problems should not affect the consumer, because the companies promoting open source have to indemnify their customers from patent lawsuits. This problem will eventually resolve itself as the market for open source software grows.

Some people are trying to redefine freedom, and limit our liberty; but they loose miserably...
A US federal judge has ruled against antitrust
claims that the General Public Licence promotes unfair competition, and
in doing so has promoted its cause.
On Monday, US Federal Judge John Daniel Tinder, dismissed the Sherman
Act antitrust claims brought against the Free Software Foundation.
The claims made by Plaintiff Daniel Wallace included: that the General
Public License (GPL) constituted a contract, combination or conspiracy;
that it created an unreasonable restraint of trade; and that the FSF
conspired with IBM, Red Hat, Novell and other individuals to pool and
cross-license their copyrighted intellectual property in a predatory
price fixing scheme.

My Favorite Desktop under Linux has reach a huge milestone
KDE 4.3.0 is out, and it is a great release. It is unlikely that any one specific thing will strike the user as the most noticeable improvement; rather, the overall user experience of KDE has improved greatly in KDE 4.3.0. The release's codename, Caizen, is a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement throughout all aspects of life. That has been the goal of the KDE team for 4.3.0: polish, polish, polish. The statistics from the bug tracker speak for themselves: 10,000 bugs have been fixed. In addition, close to 63,000 changes were checked in by a little under 700 contributors. That is not to say that the KDE team did not add a large number of new features: 2000 feature requests were implemented in the past 6 months, meaning that any user's pet feature might well be among the improvements KDE 4.3.0 brings. Thanks to Ondřej Surý, maintainer for some Debian packages, you can have the latest PHP5 maintained by Debian PKG PHP Team in Ubuntu Oneiric, Natty, Maverick and Lucid.
Currently it is the previous version 5.3.9, but that’s already a lot better than 5.3.6 (Official in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric). I did contact Ondřej to ask him for updating the Personal Package Archive to 5.3.10.
Personal Package Archives (PPA) allow you to upload Ubuntu source packages to be built and published as an apt repository by Launchpad.
Ondřej Surý’s Personal Package Archives (PPA) is located at https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/php5
Just run as root the following to use PHP 5.3.9
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/php5
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I did create an account at https://launchpad.net/~cedric-walter just in case I would like to build some packages for Ubuntu.

Open Source Web Design is a community of designers and site owners sharing free web design templates as well as web design information. Helping to make the internet a prettier place!
The Open Source Web Design project was founded in September 2000 by Frank Skettino ( bkenoah ) as a way for the average Joe-Hacker to have a quality, organized web design template ready for him when he's ready to share his ideas on the World Wide Web. We understood that many hackers would like to have a place to share their ideas on the Web, but are too busy to create a decent layout. This results in a poorly organized page or none at all. With OSWD, we hope to solve this problem. If You also search a new templates design for Mambo, I recommend You to visit as soon as possible

A survey conducted by IT consulting firm Optaros and InformationWeek magazine shows that American companies and government organizations are saving millions of dollars with open source software. Conducted in September 2005, the survey is based on responses collected from over 500 companies, government agencies, and organizations. According to the collected data, approximately 87 percent of American organizations use open source software within their technology infrastructure.

Add this to my bet: In fact a lot of companies are trying open source and never go back to proprietary alternatives, or at least : less company go back than Microsoft expectations. That's why Microsoft has started a FUD survey like 'Get the Facts' campaign...vendor locking won't stop customer to go away.
