At http://source.android.com/download they describes how to set up your local work environment, how to use GIT to get the Android files, and how to build the files on your machine. The source is approximately 2.1GB in size.

Try android emulator for FREE

• Download the SDK from http://code.google.com/android/download.html
• Unpack and start the emulator tools\emulator.exe

 Nullwire has posted a how to

1. Download and install the Android SDK found here.
2. Download this zip containing new latest Android images:

• android_images_sdk1.5.zip (28Mb)

3. Unpack files to a temporary location.
4. Backup the folder <android-sdk-folder>/tools/lib/images (<android-sdk-folder> is the Android SDK installation folder)
5. Replace the files ramdisk.img, system.img and userdata.img in <android-sdk-folder>/tools/lib/images with the files unpacked from the zip in step 3.
6. Start the emulator and wait.

It seems that in the graphical and overall user experience, Android is catching fast the iPhone (even if HTC add a layer call HTC Sense UI on top of android). Non Android handset, aka all windows mobile 6.1, should also get this new UI as an update soon.
