Guide how to replace PS3 Laser Lens
            version 1.0

    ps3.change.lens

Attention: This operation will void your warranty!!! I recommend you to send it to
SONY if bought your PS3 less than a year ago.
Attention: While this operation require no particular knowledge, don't try it if you
have no patience and feel not confident enough!
Attention: Look at other tutorials at the end of my article before starting, I did not represent
all steps in details. Use them to complete missing steps (this is my brother's PS3, mine
may die also soon, will complete tutorial then)

DISCLAIMER: This tutorial is for information purposes, and I am not responsible or can
be held responsible if you screw up your PS3 by following this tutorial. Make sure the
PS3 is unplugged from mains power AT ALL TIMES. Mains power is dangerous!
Dismantle the Playstation 3 console and follow this tutorial at your own risk!

    Duration: 25 minutes
Cost: 35 euro (SONY ask 200 euro, some shops 99 euro with 3 months warranty)

    Tool required:

    ps3.change.lens_torx_set
    Torx screwdriver TR10 :ps3.change.lens_torx_tr10

Put them beside in the same order as you did remove them. This will help a lot when you put everything back!

You can now remove the 2 metal plate that encase the ps3 BLU-RAY drive.
ps3.change.lens_006 Remove the white plastic part that maintain the DVD in place and put beside.

:? that very interesing to lean. Thanks for being so generous with your
knowledge. You have anwered a question Ive had for some time.I BUILD Computers
and am almost at the end of my very 1st masterpiece and have some more room in
the antec 1200full tower. If you have time or whenever possibble could you tell
me if it is absolutely necassarry to buy a new lens?I ask because I have a 60 GB
model thats almost 1 year and a half old and in perfect physical & working
condition,so the lens works like new. :?
    Cedric Walter |84.75.105.xxx |2008-10-14 21:22:29
    Hi

If it's work, don't buy or change anything. Do not store also lenses in advance
(even is 25euro is cheap), as the quality may improve with time.

I have 8 friends that have sent back their ps3, the failure rate is high with
the first batch of 60GB version. Mine is still working through...
    Richard  - Mr. |71.176.182.xxx |2008-11-29 18:58:20
Thanks, that really helped. I got an early 60gb model that quit playing ps3
games about 6 mo. after I got it and I've been using it for nothing more than a
dvd player for the past year and a half. I have a laser on the way, and I can't
wait to play again. So playing dvd's on the ps3 will shorten the blu ray's life?
    Cedric Walter |90.33.159.xxx |2008-11-29 20:59:46
no, playing DVD wont shorten any lens in any devices. The problem with early PS3
is just a bad batch of lens or an industrial process not controlled in early
production stages. As you see in my articles, a lens is now quite cheap and of
    far better quality

I want to try this, how do I get a new len? If this work will my Ps3 be back to

    Leo931  - What kind of Len do I need for a 60GB PS3? |74.179.47.xxx |2008-12-01 06:34:51
What Kind of len do I need for a 60GB PS3?
    Cedric Walter |195.144.48.xxx |2008-12-01 09:09:17
    1.
Lens are all the same for all model of PS3
So you can buy any reference, but prefer KES-400AAA (not that you get an old
    batch of first generation lenses)

    2. Yes your ps3 will work like day one. DVD, bluray and game will work like the
    first day
    The Server Surfer  - I'm an idiot |99.48.149.xxx |2008-12-20 05:35:05
I was attempting to clean the lens of my optical drive, a process that I had
    done a few times before.

Like a moron, I forgot to remove the disc from the drive before disassembly.
When I went to crack open the drive itself, it didn't come apart easily like it
normally does, and so I massaged it gently apart. That's when I discovered the
disc in the drive. (Unfortunately, the label on the disc was almost all black,
so I didn't notice it in there beforehand.)

So I went ahead and took the disc out of the drive, cleaned the lens, and put
everything back together. When I booted the PlayStation, the little blue light
was on, indicating that a disc was in the drive. (The drive was empty.) I hit
the Eject button, hoping it would reset everything. The drive made some noises
like it was ejecting a disc, and the light went out. "Success," I
thought, and attempted to insert a disc. The disc wouldn't go in to t...

You have done your best, and I would have try the same following...

maybe the rebuild database, restore file system or restore defaults option may
get you back to the normal mode, worth a try:

    http://www.waltercedric.com/gadget-mainmenu-103...

Dont forget to save all your game save, wallpapers, and trailers, just in
    case...
The Server Surfer  - Thanks for the advice |99.48.149.xxx |2008-12-20 19:53:07
I actually some how managed to fix it on my own, by reassembling the drive with
the disc already in place. I guess I hadn't previously done as good a job of
that as I had thought. :p

And thanks for the tip on the service mode. I had never heard of that, but I'm
going to bookmark it for future reference. :)

Is there an anti static point that has to be soldered on the new lens?
    Cedric Walter |92.138.245.xxx |2008-12-24 01:39:54
Is there an anti static point that has to be soldered on the new lens?

No as far as I know.

    sidemote:
Attention: ps3 40gb may use a different lens: LENS KES-410A or KES-410ACA (but
some ps3 40gb has been found with the other lens KES-400AAA)

    Hi,
    I have PS3 60GB, but I have problem in my PS3.
When I start the ps3 game it became freezing and it freezes in the loading
during the game, but about DVD it's ok. and I've V 2.53 .
    Maybe from the lens???
    What I do ??
NOTE: When I changed the old lens, the new lens broke after four days and I
    return the old lens now.
    Please help me .. :?
    Cedric Walter |81.50.176.xxx |2009-01-04 11:03:10
    Hi Hudeifa,

I have no idea, either change the whole cd drive or send your ps3 to sony repair
facilities (maybe the latest is your best bet)
    Hudeifa |41.252.2.xxx |2009-01-04 15:00:01
    Hi,
Thank you for response, but i have question :
What do you think about buying new lens KES 400AAA, or ...? :?
    Cedric Walter |81.50.240.xxx |2009-01-25 10:48:29
Open your machine before ordering any lens, there is no garantee, so open first
    then order :-)
    J. Rodriguez  - Lens did not fix problem... |71.96.231.xxx |2009-01-06 02:04:28
I bought a KES-400A blu ray lens and I just got done putting in the new one
because I was not able to play games, blu ray, and movies. The bubble at the
top right would come on for a second then nothing would happen. New laser lens,
same old problems. Does anyone know why this is?
    Anonymous |67.52.31.xxx |2009-03-19 22:39:14
It's probably because the laser you bought is also not working. Send it back to
get an exchange as a DOA.
    nathan  - did you fix your ps3 problem? |115.130.31.xxx |2009-08-17 10:46:05
Hi mate, i wanted to ask you if you solved your PS3 problem. I am also having
the same problem as you (installed a new laser, bubble flashes for 1 second then
disappears, no disc spinning and no reaction to any disc.

Ive tried a few different things to no avail. Any info would be greatly
    appreciated.
